This book is not only a rare attempt to analyze an interesting, important, yet understudied relationship between two major Arab states, but it's a great resource for both those who are new to the subject and for those who have been steeped in Middle East relations. The author has obviously gone through a lot of source material and has used a wide variety of sources in multiple languages. The work is thorughly footnoted and documented, giving anyone intersted in the subject a multitude of launching points for further research or enlightenment.Despite the heavy use of source material, the author clearly presents her own analysis and ideas from what seems to be an unprejudiced perspective. It is this perspective that allows glimpses of otherwise unseen or unnoticed relationships and forces which help to define the unusual relationship - and the evolution of that relationship - between Syria and Saudi Arabia (or perhaps, more aptly, between the houses of Assad and Sa'ud). A great eye-opener for undergrads and a reliable resource for those more advanced.
